A local pastor made history when he recently became Methodist Charlton Medical Center’s first open heart surgery patient. Pastor Jerry Hull with Faith Bible Church in DeSoto is doing well and recuperating at home. The surgery was performed by Thomas Hoang, MD, an independently practicing cardiothoracic surgeon on the Methodist Health System medical staff. The open heart surgery program is just the latest in a full spectrum of complete cardiovascular care offered at Methodist Charlton, ranging from diagnostic and minimally invasive surgery to open heart surgery and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
Although the open heart surgery program is new at Methodist Charlton, its physicians, nurses, and staff bring decades of open heart surgery experience to the program. In addition to Dr. Hoang, the program includes cardiothoracic surgeon John Jay, MD, and cardiologists Russell Canham, MD; Ravi Chandrasekhara, MD; Robert Ficula, DO; Timothy Issac, MD; Vishu Lammata, MD; Manish Patel, MD; Archana Srivastava, MD; Roberto Wayhs, MD; and Randall Wilson, MD, all independently practicing physicians on the Methodist Health System medical staff.

Methodist Charlton is currently relocating and expanding its post-coronary interventional unit (PCIU), at a cost of $2.8 million, to support cardiology services. An intermediate care unit recently opened to serve patients that require more monitoring and closer observation than a medical/surgical unit patient. Methodist Charlton also offers 24/7 interventional cardiology coverage and recently treated its first ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) patient using Lifenet software that allows for rapid clinical coordination between EMS providers and hospitals treating patients experiencing a heart attack. The noninvasive cardiology department has been accredited in the area of adult transesophageal and adult transthoracic by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL), and the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Methodist Charlton was recognized for its commitment to improving the quality of life by enhancing standards of care.
